arrive alive is managed in partnership with community organisations and through a road safety management structure that includes the Premier, government Ministers, and senior officers of Victoria Police, VicRoads, the Transport Accident Commission and the Department of Justice. The Government’s co-ordinated approach to road safety will continue to be led by the three Ministers responsible for road safety in Victoria – the Minister for Roads and Ports, the Minister for Police and Emergency Services and the Minister responsible for the Transport Accident Commission.


This explains the roles of each of these four agencies in achieving the goals set in the arrive alive strategy.

 

VicRoads

VicRoads is responsible for managing the Victorian arterial road network and its use as an integral part of the overall transport system. The functions and objects of VicRoads are outlined in the Transport Act 1983, Road Safety Act 1986 and the Road Management Act 2004. These Acts provide VicRoads with the powers to manage the 22,320 km of Victoria’s arterial road network implement road safety strategies and programs and provide vehicle registration and driver licensing services.

Transport Accident Commission (TAC) 

The role of the TAC is to pay for treatment and benefits for people injured in transport accidents. It is also involved in promoting road safety in Victoria and in improving Victoria's trauma system. Funding used by the TAC to perform these functions comes from payments made by Victorian motorists when they register their vehicles each year with VicRoads. The TAC is a "no-fault" scheme. This means that medical benefits will be paid to an injured person - regardless of who caused the accident.

Department of Justice 

The purpose of the department is to assist the government achieve its vision of a safe and just Victoria. The department does this by contributing to the administration of civil and criminal justice and public safety, responsible management and regulation of gaming and racing and providing an effective framework for consumer affairs.
