Pedestrians
Each year, on average around 51 pedestrians are killed on Victoria’s roads. The First Action Plan will substantially improve pedestrian safety by introducing new public education campaigns and improving road infrastructure used by pedestrians.
| Area of action |
Actions |
| Public education |
- Undertake public education campaigns to:
- encourage drivers to avoid shopping strips and areas of high pedestrian activities and use alternate routes
- increase compliance with school zone speed limits
- raise awareness that pedestrians are at a higher risk of crash involvement when intoxicated.
- Undertake targeted promotion activities to increase consumer take up of vehicles with features that do less harm to pedestrians.
- Educate children and their guardians regarding road risks and how to teach pedestrian skills.
- Deliver school based (primary and secondary) traffic safety education programs, with a focus on pedestrian safety in primary schools.
|
| Infrastructure |
- Carry out engineering treatments to:
- increase the number of pedestrian crossings, including refuge islands
- install fencing to walkways and other pedestrian facilities.
- Design pedestrian facilities according to the needs of vulnerable road users.
- Implement speed management and traffic calming measures in areas of high pedestrian activity whilst maintaining network efficiency.
|
| Research and data |
- Increase understanding of the pedestrian crash risk to inform the delivery of more effective public education activities to all road users.
