Information for P1 probationary drivers

From 1 July 2008, a one year P1 probationary licence is issued to a learner who has passed the hazard perception test, completed 120 hours of supervised driving and passed the new on-road driving test.

(A driver who obtained their probationary licence before 1 July 2008 will be licenced under the previous system.)

A probationary driver aged under 21 when first licensed, stays on their P1 licence for a minimum of 12 months. During this P1 period, all mobile phone use is banned, this includes hand held, hands free and text or video messaging. A P1 driver can't tow unless it is for work, and the P1 driver is under instruction.

P1 drivers can carry no more than one passenger aged 16 to 21 years.

Probationary drivers who are aged 21 years or older when first licensed will move directly to a P2 licence.

All P1 holders will be subject to new restrictions on driving high powered cars and will need a good driving record to graduate to the next type of licence. If a P1 licence is suspended as a result of a driving offence, accumulation of demerit points, or a penalty imposed by a Court, the probationary period will be extended by six months plus the suspension period. A P1 driver under 21 will only be allowed to carry one passinger aged 16 to 21.

The table below outlines requirements for people under 21 years of age when applying for a probationary licence
