Information for parents and supervisors

Parents and supervisors play an essential role in not only working with your learner driver to gain the necessary driving experience of at least 120 hours , but also in their first years as solo probationary driver.

Supervising a learner is challenging but it can also be rewarding. Your job is to give your learner opportunities to practise their driving under your supervision.

You are not an instructor, but you can give lots of advice early in the learner period.

‘Guide for Supervising Drivers’ has more information about what supervising drivers can do to make the most of their time with a learner.

When the learner gets their P1 probationary licence they join a group of drivers who have more crashes than any other road user.

You can help by encouraging them to stick to the special rules that apply to probationary drivers which are to help to protect them.

And encourage them to avoid dangerous situations such as carrying too many passengers and driving at night.

A Parents Guide to P plate Driving’ has more information to help you through this period of probationary driving.
