The Great Ocean Ride DVD

The Great Ocean Road winds its way through spectacular scenery along the southwest coast of Victoria. It is a challenging ride for experienced motorcyclists and definitely no place for beginners.

The Great Ocean Road starts at Torquay and ends at Allansford just east of Warrnambool. The most popular section for riders is between Anglesea and Apollo Bay. It’s a narrow, two lane road which hugs the coastal cliffs and has an incredible diversity of road and traffic conditions. There’s every type of curve imaginable, with a heavy flow of buses, trucks and tourist traffic, all of which can create unpredictable conditions for riders.

Be aware of hazards

The road is exposed to all sorts of weather which can change with little warning. A typical day’s ride can take you through rain storms, blazing heat and howling winds. This weather can lead to rock falls and debris on the road, including tree branches, water and other hazards.

Inappropriate speed and fatigue are factors in many motorcycle crashes. There’s a maximum speed limit of 80km/h along most of the Great Ocean Road which is enforced. However, on some sections of the road you’ll need to go much slower. Ride within your capabilities so you can easily respond to unexpected hazards.

Plan ahead

Suggested rest stops, with fuel available, are Torquay, Anglesea, Aireys Inlet, Lorne, Wye River and Apollo Bay, but there are plenty of roadside rest areas where you can take a break and enjoy the view. The towns can be extremely busy on weekends and holidays, so look out for heavy vehicles and pedestrian traffic in these areas.

Throughout the ride, keep well hydrated and save drinking any alcohol till you’ve finished riding for the day. The Great Ocean Road demands a high level of riding skill and attention, so make sure you’re fully prepared before taking this ride. Be sure to check your bike is in good shape and ensure you’re wearing full protective gear.

Plan your ride before you head off, including booking a place to stay. The ride from Melbourne to Apollo Bay is long and tiring, and many crashes occur when riders try to return to Melbourne the same day.
