Safer roads program
The arrive alive Safer Roads Program is a Victorian Government initiative to tackle the road toll.
Funded by the Transport Accident Commission, between 2004 and 2007 this $240 million program is the first to significantly address run-off-road crashes in Victoria.
Why the Safer Roads Program?
Run-off-road crashes – where a motorist loses control of their vehicle and runs off the road into trees and other objects on the roadside at high speeds – represent a substantial proportion of the road toll, particularly in rural areas.
Over the past five years in country Victoria, 42 per cent of fatal crashes and 33 per cent of serious injury crashes involved vehicles running off the road and colliding with objects on the road side.
In the outer metropolitan area, run-off-road crashes account for 36 per cent of fatal crashes and 24 per cent of serious injury crashes.
The Safer Roads Program aims to reduce these crashes and their severity through targeted safety improvements to the road environment in rural and outer metropolitan areas.
Building upon the success of former blackspot programs, the new Safer Roads Program also targets intersection crashes and road improvements in outer metropolitan areas.
How will the Safer Roads Program reduce the road toll?
With its focus on run-off-road crashes, the Safer Roads Program is expected to help significantly reduce deaths and road trauma. Serious injuries alone are expected to be reduced by between 160 and 260 each year.
To achieve this reduction a number of measures that have a proven record in reducing fatality and serious injury crashes will be introduced at high risk locations across the state. These include:
Road improvements
- roadside safety barriers
- shoulder sealing
- removal of roadside hazards
- audio-tactile edge line marking
- improving road curves
- improved road markings and signage
Intersection improvements
- roundabouts
- traffic lights
- additional lanes for turning traffic
- better lane marking
Implementation
Safer Roads projects will be progressively announced.
