Types of school speed limits
The school speed limits program is designed to be flexible and meet the needs of all Victorian schools and the travelling public.
Advance Warning Signs | Advance Warning Signs tell motorists they are approaching a school zone with reduced speed limits. Drivers should be prepared to slow down during school times. |
Permanent 40km/h roads | On some roads outside schools, permanent 40km/h speed limits are in place. Motorists must obey this 40km/h limit at all times. |
60km/h and 70km/h roads | Time based 40km/h speed limit outside schools on 60km/h and 70km/h roads. This will apply 8.00am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4.00pm on school days. The regular 60 or 70km/h limit applies outside these times. |
80km/h, 90km/h and 100km/h roads | Time based 60km/h speed limit outside schools on 80km/h, 90km/h and 100km/h roads. This will apply 8.00am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4.00pm on school days. The regular 80, 90 or 100km/h limit applies outside these times. |
| Roads with a speed limit of 70 km/h or higher, and which carry more than 500 vehicles each day; and roads with a speed limit of 60 km/h with high traffic volumes, will use electronic variable speed limit signs. The speed limits on these signs change. Drivers should always travel within the speed limit shown on these signs. |
All school speed limits across the State are clearly signposted. Motorists are urged to look out for the speed signs near schools and slow down to improve road safety for children.
