Vehicle safety technology for all new cars
Under Victoria’s road safety strategy arrive alive 2008-2017, vehicle safety technology will be made compulsory for all new cars manufactured from 1 January 2011.
The widespread introduction of advanced vehicle safety technologies in cars is critical in reducing road trauma under the new strategy.
Victoria has lead the nation in road safety, with the introduction of seat belts, the roll out of drink driving technology and random drug testing.The next step is the introduction of new life saving vehicle technology, such as electronic stability control and head protection technology.

From 1 January 2011 the installation of electronic stability control (ESC) will be compulsory in all new cars manufactured after this date

From 1 January 2012 the installation of head protection technology, such as side-curtain airbags will be compulsory in all new cars manufactured after this date
- The Victorian Government will show leadership by introducing electronic stability control and head protection technology into the government fleet over the next three years, giving manufacturers an incentive to install these technologies in all cars.
