Safer roads and roadsides
Improving the safety of roads and roadsides will provide a much safer environment for all road users in Victoria.
The likelihood of Victorians being killed or seriously injured as a result of involvement in common types of crashes can be reduced through improved road infrastructure. For example, risk associated with run-off-road crashes can be reduced through the removal of roadside hazards and installation of safety barriers.
There will also be a focus on prevention through an expanded Greyspot program which is a proactive safety program targeting outer metropolitan and rural intersections. Intersections that have been identified as a road safety concern by the community and others are eligible for treatments.
The most common crash types – side impact crashes, run-off-road crashes, head-on crashes and rear-end crashes – account for around 72 per cent of all fatal crashes on Victoria’s roads each year. By improving road and roadside infrastructure, arrive alive 2008-2017 will make a major contribution towards reducing the number and severity of these common types of road crashes
